How to Get Motivated to Clean House on the Weekend

It shouldn’t be that hard to get motivated to clean house, right? Wrong. If you’re a working mom like me, whether home based or a traditional job, you know how difficult it can be to find that motivation.

You have worked all week, taken kids to batting practice and other after school activities, grocery shopped and cooked the most amazing meals. Now, it’s the weekend. Exhausted from the long work week, you would like nothing more than to just lounge in your pj’s all day. It’s time to relax and enjoy time away from work and all those other responsibilities.

Or, so you thought…

Since you’re here, I’m sure you have realized it doesn’t work that way. The house looks like a tornado hit it (as my mom used to say). There are toys in every room, including the bathroom. The floor in your son’s room is blanketed with clothes (Who knows if they’re clean or dirty? It’s probably best just to rewash them all.) And, even though you have swept every day this week (sometimes more than once), you can still feel the grit underneath your feet from the constant running in and out of the house.

Believe me, I completely understand your frustration and your desire to close the blinds, crawl back in bed, and just forget about it. But, this is life. As mothers, we chose to take the good with the bad, and so we shall. Sometimes we just need a little motivation and the occasional glass of wine (or maybe that’s just me).

So, how do you get motivated to clean house on the weekend after working all week? Try these five tips below to get you moving and find your motivation.

Think about how good you will feel with a clean house.

According to an article by ABCHealthNews, one of the best benefits of having a clean house is reducing stress and fatigue. As working moms, stress and fatigue are two major factors in how we spend our time at home with our families. And, spending time with our families is high up there on our priority list.

Think about it. When you walk into the house and see toys scattered across the floor, laundry on the couch, and smell the remnants of last nights dinner, how do you feel? If you’re like most people, you immediately think about all the things that need to be done. Whatever good mood you were in is probably gone, and you’re now distracted by all the clutter. The nagging images of a dirty house that keep replaying in the back of your mind are just as debilitating as the shrill voice of your three-year-old whining for a solid hour when he misses his nap time.

Now, imagine walking into a house that smells of lemon and lavender. The floors are sparkling, and everything is in its place. (Well, mostly. With three kids, it’s nearly impossible for it to be spotless.) You feel refreshed and your mind is focused on doing something fun and productive. You feel more relaxed and in control. As the saying goes, “tidy home, tidy mind.”

Get up and get dressed.

I know it’s the weekend, but laying in bed isn’t going to help get anything accomplished. And it certainly isn’t going to give you the motivation or inspiration you need to clean a house that’s been lived in all week.

Take it from me, a mom of three rowdy kids that works Monday through Friday and sometimes Saturday and Sunday, too… If you will just get up, get showered, and get dressed, you will feel refreshed and energetic. This is a big step in tackling the mess.

Go buy something that makes you happy.

What I really mean is, go shopping for cleaning supplies. Buy fragrances that cleanse the air and just make your home smell good. Buy something that makes cleaning easier, like a new duster, vacuum or refillable Swiffer Wet Jet (This last one really helps me keep up during the week by spot mopping, so it’s not such a chore on the weekend).

For me, buying new things gets me kind of excited. I usually can’t wait to see how things work or smell. I’m definitely a sucker for sweet and fruity fragrances.

If you struggle with clutter, you will definitely need to get that under control before you can get to cleaning. With clutter, organization is key. Everything needs a place. If it doesn’t have one, either make a place for it or chunk it.

I am an Amazon Prime junkie. (Free two-day shipping? I’m all for that. Especially during the holidays and birthdays. I am so last minute.) And I have to say, they have a ton of functional storage to choose from. I’m not big on the containers you stuff under beds or in closets (I always seem to forget they’re even there and buy new stuff), but I love the visually appealing furniture pieces that offer storage space. Here are a few pieces similar to what I have.

Turn up the tunes.

If you’re having trouble getting focused and energized enough to get moving, try cranking up the tunes. Music is known to have a positive effect on our moods, and it has increasingly grown to be a part of everyday life for most.

According to Professor Adrian North, quoted in this article from the Huffington Post, the type of effects music has on us is determined by whether we view it as pleasant or unpleasant and active vs. sleepy. In the case of finding our groove for sanitizing and disinfecting, I’d say we need to find something pleasant and active to get us going.

Get out that iPod, pop in those ear buds, and create a new playlist just for cleaning. You know, something upbeat so you can move the mop to the beat. And, just as an added bonus, you get in the days workout while cleaning. You kill two birds with one stone, so to speak.


Just start cleaning.

Just like with anything else in life, if you want something done, you have to take action. Motivation doesn’t just magically appear. It comes by consciously thinking of what needs to be done and taking that first step.

It can be overwhelming if you have let household chores go untouched for too long. You might even be wondering where to start or if it’s even possible to conquer the mess. I have been there.

Simply, take the first step. Start with one room. Remove the clutter, and put everything in its place one piece at a time. With every item you put away, you will feel encouraged to do more, and you’ll realize it is actually possible. You will motivate yourself to a clean house along the way.

Here goes… Get up. Get dressed. Think about how wonderfully refreshing it will feel once you have a clean house. Go buy some awesome fragrances and cleaning products you love. Come back. Crank up the tunes, and get to work. To get motivated to clean house, you have to take action first.
