When is the last time you did something for yourself – something that will make you happy or contribute to your health or self-esteem? When’s the last time you had a little “me time?”
Having kids makes for an interesting life, doesn’t it? They give us a challenge and remind us of the importance of loving relationships. But we often neglect one of the most important relationships we have. The relationship with ourselves.
As mothers, we give more of ourselves than we ever thought possible. In those first few months, we get limited amounts of sleep. We feed every two or three hours, and somehow, through the exhaustion, we manage to still do all the things needed to keep a home running.
As our little ones grow, there is work, after school activities, dental appointments, laundry and dinner. And, in my case, a 9:30 p.m. ER visit, with my 12-year-old on a Monday night, resulting from a somersault over the back of the couch causing a severe back sprain (and a lot of pain). Yes, this really happened. (I’m still shaking my head about this one.)
The point – we give a lot of ourselves. It’s important for us to replenish that love by fulfilling our own desires and practicing self-care and showing ourselves some self-love.
When you’re tired, always rushing, and stressed, self-nourishment and a much needed mental break can help you find balance, be more productive and avoid burnout.

Ways to Incorporate “Me Time” Into Your Schedule
Although a week-long beach vacation would be absolutely magnificent, most of the time it’s just not gonna happen. So, if you’re looking for ways to squeeze a little me time into your hectic schedule, you are in the right place!
Below are 5 ways to incorporate some personal time into your busy schedule with specific ideas for each, including ways to relax, activities that rejuvenate your thoughts, and things to do just for fun. I hope you’re able to benefit from some of these and create more balance.
1. Do something for yourself when the kids are in bed.
- Take a long, hot bath with some aromatherapy and just relax.

- Watch a comedy show, and laugh ’til it hurts.
- Read a book to wind down.
- Poor a glass of wine and search for inspiration on Pinterest.
2. Take a day off work while the kids are in school.
- Take a day trip to somewhere you’ve never been.
- Have a spa day.
- Go see a matinee.
- Stay in your pajamas all day and binge watch your favorite t.v. show.
- Learn a new skill/hobby.
3. Find activities where your kids can tag along.
- Go for a walk at the park while your kids play.
- Go for ice cream.
- Crank up some tunes and have a dance party – let loose.
- Try a new recipe and have the kids be your taste testers.
- Go to your local library.
4. Wake up earlier.
- Meditate to open your mind and inspire a beautiful day.
- Have your coffee outside and enjoy nature.
- Go for a walk/run for a good energy boost to get your day started.
- Work on a craft project/hobby.
- Create a list to prioritize your day.
5. Use your lunch break wisely.
- Get a pedicure or manicure.
- Call a good friend and catch up.
- Go shopping.
- Have lunch with a friend.
- Read a motivational book.
Life is Better With a Little “Me Time”
I know finding the time can be a challenge, but life is better with a little me time. So take time for yourself to replenish and rejuvenate and avoid mom burnout.
