Canfield's most thought provoking book, The Success Principles, teaches you the necessary fundamentals of success and how to put them into practice. If you're looking for a great personal development and self improvement book, this is it.The Success Principles

Jack Canfield’s best seller The Success Principles: How to Get from Where You Are to Where You Want to Be is probably the most thought provoking book that I’ve ever had the pleasure to read. Not only does Canfield teach you the necessary fundamentals of success, he teaches you how to put them into practice in your own life. He has found a way to ensure you experience each of these fundamentals by sharing stories of other successful individuals from all walks of life.

As I read the numerous success stories I began to feel like I became a part of them. I could see and feel how these principles could work for me. So, let me tell you a little about where I was on a personal level as I began my journey in self-improvement with The Success Principles.

My Story

This is a little out of my comfort zone (sharing my personal experience with self-doubt that alienated me and left me feeling helpless). But, I want to share just how The Success Principles has had an impact on my life.

Here goes…

Not too long ago, I was in a bad place. That place wreaked of self doubt, hopelessness and bitterness. I had spent years at a job that had, in the beginning, brought me so much joy and aspiration. Now that same job was drowning me and had smothered all my hopes and dreams. I was so consumed with frustration that I forgot what it meant to have a happy home. My personal life, my family, was slipping away from me, and I knew I had to do something.

I tried my hand with a network marketing company for a little while hoping it would open a door to success, so I could leave me day job. It wasn’t for me. However, I wouldn’t trade my time learning and growing with the company and those individuals for anything. Along the way I was encouraged to look within myself for success.

The words self improvement and personal development seemed to be reaching out to me wherever I went. It was as if they had their hand out asking me to walk with them. Eventually, I gave in, did some research and decided to begin with a book. I settled on The Success Principles, and this is where it lead…

The Fundamentals of Success

It took quite some time to get into the right groove of reading it, but once I did, it was like someone lit a fire under me. I couldn’t put it down!

The first five chapters really set things into focus.

  1. Take 100% Responsibility for Your Life
  2. Be Clear Why You’re Here
  3. Decide What You Want
  4. Believe It’s Possible
  5. Believe In Yourself

“The indispensable first step to getting the things you want out of life is this: decide what you want.” – Ben Stein

By focusing on what I truly wanted and putting it on paper, I knew I had to take responsibility for why and how I got to this point and do something about it. After a lot of thought and discussion on this matter, it finally happened. I quit my job. (This is not something I suggest you do, but for me it was the right choice at the right time.)

“If you keep on doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep on getting what you’ve always got.” – The Success Principles

Initially I had mixed emotions. I had worked so hard to get to where I was in my career. I had worked with these individuals for so long that we became like family. Even so, it didn’t take long for me to feel such a since of relief. It was like a weight had been lifted off me. I found myself saying and doing things I hadn’t in a while. I was smiling more and laughing at trivial things instead of getting so worked up. After all, I only have control over my actions not those of others.

Look at Me Now

Prior to up and quitting my job, I had been motivated to start a new project – a blog. I found it interesting and thought it could be a creative outlet for me and maybe even a little side hustle. Since then, that’s been my focus (aside from my family, of course). Although I still have work to do in many aspects of my life (self-improvement is a continuous journey), I am happy to say that I haven’t been this happy and motivated in for-e-ver. I am currently rereading The Success Principles, and I think it’s even better the second time around. This is definitely one you want to keep on the shelf.

“Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase. Just take the first step.” – Martin Luther King Jr.
